Smoke Ventilation System

November 2022

Project Detail:

Curvent International was awarded the prestigious smoke ventilation project at the newly built Pick & Pay Inland Distribution Centre, located at East Port Logistics Park, Johannesburg. The facility is built on a 500 000m² site with a staggering building footprint of 146 000m², making this the fifth largest distribution center in the world.

Curvent International’s scope of work covered six key areas of the facility each with a specific smoke ventilation design requirement and smoke extraction function comprising of the following smoke extraction solutions:

Chocolate Box area is a self-contained temperature controlled high-rack storage area located within the Dry Goods warehouse. Two (2) Curvent Fire-X Vertical Ventilators are installed on the outlet of two (2) 1 000mm diameter smoke extraction fans. The system is controlled a single zone smoke control panel. The replacement air for the smoke extraction system is achieved by means of automatic doors that open in the event of a fire.

The Dry Goods warehouse is 96 000m² high rack storage warehouse. The smoke extraction system serving this large area is made-up of Five Hundred and Sixty (560) Curvent Fire-X Vertical Ventilators installed within the 27-meter-high monitors. The warehouse is subdivided into Twenty-Eight (28) smoke zones by means of 8 125m² of smoke baffles. The ventilators are controlled by Four (4), Seven (7) smoke zone control panels all linking back to the Twenty-Eight (28) zone repeater panel.

The Office area is a two-story multi-purpose building comprising of canteens, changing rooms, ablution facilities with cellular and open plan office space. Four (4) different smoke zones are within the building and have mechanical smoke extraction systems. These comprise of Five (5) Smoke Extraction fans with Curvent Fire-X Vertical ventilators installed on their respective outlets through Curvent Fire Dampers used for zone separation. The replacement air is provided by Twelve (12) automated windows installed around the building, which are further controlled by the Three (3) smoke control panels.

The 44 600m² cold room (Perishables), is another high rack cold storage warehouse made up of Twenty-Six (26) smoke zones spread across the cold room area, as well as the roof void. The mechanical extraction system currently comprises of two areas, namely: the ambient area and the coldroom area. The ambient area has Ten (10) smoke extraction fans that are ducted from within the ambient area out through the roof. The coldroom area has Forty-Six (46) Smoke Extraction Fans that are installed within the roof void out through the Forty-Six (46) roof mounted electro-mechanical Curvent Fire Dampers. The entire system is controlled by a Fourteen (14) smoke control panels and One (1) Repeater panel.  All the required replacement air will be provided by automated dock level doors that open on a fire signal.

The RRU is high rack storage warehouse. The smoke extraction system serving this warehouse consists of Eighty (80) Curvent Fire-X Vertical Ventilators. The warehouse is subdivided into four smoke zones by means of 668m² of smoke baffles. The ventilators are controlled by to One (1), Four (4) zone control panel that links to a repeater panel.

Safety Store is a 1 321m² fire compartment that has Three (3) Smoke Extraction Fans accompanied by Three (3) electromechanical Curvent Fire-X Vertical ventilators installed on the outlet of the fans. The makeup replacement air for the space is achieved by means of fusible link only Curvent Fire Dampers installed at low level covered by the Curvent Super Flow Fixed (SFF) louver. Safety Store’s smoke extraction system is controlled by a single zone smoke control panel.

To summarize the above, the monumental installation that has been installed within nine months has a total of:

  • Six Hundred and Fifty (650) Curvent Fire X Vertical ventilators

  • Sixty-Six (66) Smoke extraction fans

  • Fifty-Six (56) Curvent Fire Dampers

  • Eight Hundred and Four (804) Curvent manufactured smoke extraction duct pieces

  • Four (4) Curvent Super Flow Fixed (SFF) louvers type.

  • Eight Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-Three (8 793m²) Smoke Baffles

  • Ten (10) Rain sensors

  • Fifteen Thousand and Thirty (15 030) meters of fire rated cable

  • Twenty-Seven (27) Smoke control panels.

Curvent remains the preferred ventilation company in our industry.
